When we take time to study the early life of Joseph Smith, there isn't much that sets him apart from others. His parents weren't famous, they were not wealthy. He didn't live in a lavish house or live a life that was remarkable by the standards of today's world. Neither did he possess anything that the youth of the world seem to envy from those in the media. Yet there is so much to learn from his humble character.
When almost losing his leg, from complications with Typhoid fever, he showed remarkable amounts of faith. He suffered an unimaginable amount of pain for a such a young child, or adult. But he trusted God and exercised faith that this experimental surgery could heal him.
"The Lord will help me, I shall get through."- Joseph Smith, Jr.
Then just past his 14th year of life, he began to think deeply and ponder the excitement of the religious movements happening around him. He observed how people faiths only drew them farther apart from one another. And that bad feelings seemed to surround them. Which may not be out of character for an adult, but in today's world many youth do not believe in God or any faith at all.
And it was the scenario that led him to search the scriptures and act on the words he read in James 1:5. Joseph was a seeker of truth! No matter your age you can learn from Joseph by trusting in God, exercising more faith, thinking deeply, pondering, searching the scriptures and acting on the revelation we receive!
